Design
The Designs for our Container Houses follow the principles of modularity with a high degree of flexibility within the system. This means that any of our houses can be easily modified and even regrouped if so desired. Our homes are made from used shipping containers which are not only structurally strong, highly resistant and easy to transport, but which also have an inherent aesthetic quality once modified to function as modern dwellings.

The structural rigidity in the metal frame and corrugation of the shipping container equal more than standard timber and steel construction. This factor leads to ease in stacking and joining in many possible configurations. The optimized frame construction allows for more square footage within the same footprint as a standard timber construction, making it particularly successful for any small and large scale housing project. Construction time from start to finish is significantly reduced through prefabrication of about 80% of the structure. Once a plan has been selected, our factory prepares the unit by cutting for windows, doors or removing sides. Windows, flooring, and other finish materials are applied easily through use of standard dimensions and pre-assembled framing.

For a Sustainable Future
Our building industry is wasting large amounts of our natural resources. The production of our homes using reclaimed shipping containers is intended to reduce the waste and material use typical of conventional house construction.

Our modular homes use less energy through the use of passive and active systems: large glass expanses will make best use of natural daylight, thus reducing the need for artificial lighting and electricity. A well insulated envelope will decrease the heating and cooling load. A modular living green roof will Increase the roofs insulation value and reduce the “heat island” effect especially in urban Centers. Solar applications for domestic warm water, radiant floor, and even electricity production are available options.

Water conservation measures might include rainwater collection systems, green roofs, grey-water systems, dual flush toilets. Materials used include FSC certified wood products, VOC free paint, metal products with high content of recycled content.

Shipping Containers
Shipping containers are in many ways an ideal building material. They are designed to carry heavy loads and resist harsh climates. They are transported globally by ship, rail or truck. The containers used in our system are recycled clear-span, 20’ steel box frames, which are structurally reinforced to meet current building codes. The modified containers will be delivered by truck and lifted in place by crane or forklift.

Materials and Finishes
The containers as such are a recycled product made of steel with a high amount of recycled content. All materials, finishes and paints used in our homes have been carefully selected to meet our standards for a more healthy and environmentally friendly indoor environment.

Green Roof
All Homes come fitted with green roofs which have many benefits: longer roof lifespan, greater sound insulation, reduced heating and cooling system needs, and a cutback in storm water runoff. Green roofs also decrease carbon dioxide making them cooler in the process reducing the so-called heat island effect.

Energy Efficiency
All Homes are fitted with a radiant floor system paired with a highly insulated envelope to reduce the overall energy demand. Upon request geo thermal and solar systems can be designed and installed for domestic warm water, radiant floor, and electricity. We are currently also investigating the application of LED lighting for all units. The large glass expanses on all units increase natural day lighting, thus reducing the energy demand for artificial lighting.
